How To Write to the Local Media

For tips on how to write an effective op-ed piece or letter to the editor, go to our separate page here.

To write to the SF New Mexican:

Writing a Letter to the Editor or Op-Ed piece (“My View”) to the Santa Fe New Mexican.  This is directly from the New Mexican’s Sunday edition (June 3, 2018):

The Santa Fe New Mexican welcomes the views of its readers.  There are two ways to write us, letters to the editor (short) and My Views (longer).  We prefer letters 150 words or less, and My Views 600 words or less.  With your submission please include your full name, street address and daytime phone number for verification purposes.

We try to publish all letters.  Letters or My View columns that are unsigned, in poor taste, libelous or incomprehensible will be rejected.  We reserve the right to reject or edit any submission.

Email your letter to:  letters@sfnewmexican.com.  Or, go to www.santafenewmexican.com and use the online submission form.  Our mailing address is 202 E. Marcy St, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

Note that these are criteria you should keep in mind when writing to the New Mexican for publication:

  1. The content should not be libelous, or advocate harm or hate of any individual group.
  2. Any facts cited should be accurate.  Include the source of the facts (if not for publication) after the letter or op-ed or in your cover email/letter.
  3. Strictly stick to the word limits:  150 words for a letter to the editor and 600 words for an op-ed (“My View”).  The shorter the letter or op-ed the more likely it will be published quickly.
  4. If you wish to submit a cartoon, please contact the editorial page editor, Inez Russell Gomez, directly:  505-986-3053 or igomez@sfnewmexican.com.
  5. With My Views, send a one-sentence description of the writer for a tagline.
  6. The New Mexican website states:  “All submissions are subject to editing, including for clarity, length, civility and style. Some My View submissions may be edited to run as letters to the editor. Questions about the opinion section can be sent to letters@sfnewmexican.com.”
  7. Any questions?  Call 986-3063.

To write to the Albuquerque Journal (directly from their website):

Letters or columns expressing opinions on news and commentary published in the Albuquerque Journal are welcome. Submissions accepted for publication may appear in print or in electronic media, including the Journal’s Internet Web site, searchable archives and databases. Preference is given to letters that are fresh, brief, clear and that don’t require factual verification. Letters must include writer’s signature, home address and telephone, and a daytime number. Though addresses and phone numbers are not published, they are needed to confirm authorship prior to publication. Letters keyed to an upcoming event or date should be mailed well in advance. All letters and opinion articles are edited, including for length and clarity.

The word limit for a letter to the editor is 300. The word limit for an opinion column is 550.  Submit your letters/op-eds here online.

To Write to the SF Reporter (directly from the website):
